The best way to explore the
sights on Lanai is by renting a
four-wheel drive jeep since most of the great
sights, and the secluded
beaches, are accessible only via unpaved,
and somewhat bumpy roads. Besides that,
the thrill of driving one of those
vehicles in places where you
wouldnt dare take your own car is a
lot of fun!
Here are a few tips that
will make your four-wheeling experience
more fun:
You have the option
of getting an open jeep or one
with all the panels snapped on.
We recommend the open option with the roof on
and the side and back covers off.
You may get a little dusty, but
the open vehicle will allow you
to feel the comfortable tropical
breezes and enjoy the lovely
floral scents on the island. It
will also keep you in touch with
how the climate changes
throughout this small island. The
red volcanic dust may not come
out of your clothes very easily,
so we recommend very casual beach
clothing. If getting a little
(emphasis on a little)
sandy and dusty is not for you,
then we recommend you skip the
four wheel experience and go back
to Honolulu and rent a limousine
for the day.
Always wear your
seat belt, even if you are
sitting in one of the back seats.
Collisions with other vehicles is
not the concern here. Instead,
some of the bumps you will
encounter will be deep enough to
throw you out of your seat if you
hit them at anything more than a
walking speed. The same goes for
any luggage or other items you
have with you: make sure they are
securely fastened to something.
If you encounter a
ditch that looks like it may be
impassable, we recommend you get
out of the jeep and have a
close-up look. Usually, this will
allow you to determine a way out.
Also, take a look at the tire
tracks of previous visitors
this will give you some
clues on how to proceed.
If you get stuck,
dont panic since we have
seen jeeps get out of some of the
most incredible predicaments. The
first thing you should do is make
sure that the four wheel drive
has actually engaged (see if all
four wheels are spinning). If it
is not engaged, disengage and
then re-engage it this may
do the trick. Also, if your tires
are spinning and you are getting
nowhere, stop immediately because
you will just dig yourself in
deeper. If this happens, start
digging with whatever tools you
can find. Concentrate on the
wheel that is least stuck since
all it takes is one good wheel to
get you out.
If you roll your
jeep, dont panic. The roll
bars on these vehicles are quite
strong and they will protect you.
Very important: keep your hands
inside the jeep and dont
grab the roll bar. How often does
a jeep get rolled? Not often, and
it wont happen to you if
you exercise a little bit of
caution.
Above all, have fun!
