Great Spots for Snorkeling on Maui

Even if you're a first-timer, snorkeling in Hawaii is a "must." The crystal clear, aqua water provides unsurpassed views of fish, turtles, rays, eels, urchins, dolphins and more. And since some of the underwater wildlife is unique to the islands, you'll have an experience that cannot be reproduced elsewhere. But where to go? Here are some of our favorite Maui snorkeling spots:

Ahihi Keanau Reserve
Snorkeling at its best. There is no sand beach here, but the cove is protected from wind and surf and the snorkeling is usually terrific and appropriate for all levels. Note that since this is a nature reserve, you are prohibited from taking coral, rocks or shells. The downside? Parking can be problematic and entering from the rocky shore isn't always easy.

Black Rock
Snorkeling around the volcanic rock (from which this area gets its name) is legendary. The rock is almost completely covered in coral with a large assortment of fish, sea turtles and occasionally octopus, but use caution when swimming around the rock as strong currents are sometimes present.

Honolu'a Bay
Honolu'a may well be the best Maui snorkeling spot on a good day. But note that conditions vary dramatically in this area depending on ocean currents, rainfall, and the season (for example, during North swells, this is a world class surfing spot and thus not good snorkeling). There are coral formations on each side of the bay and lots of colorful fish and turtles. On-road parking is limited.

La Perouse
La Perouse is an excellent place to snorkel when the ocean is calm and it isn't too windy. There is a pod of dolphins that frequents the area - usually in the early morning hours.

Polo Beach
Polo Beach, located near the Kea Lani Resort, is a pretty sand beach with clear, calm water that makes for excellent snorkeling, especially for beginners and intermediates. Be wary of the slippery rocks in the water.

Ulua/Mokapu
Ulua and Mokapu are two separate beaches (the former tends to be more popular), but both provide access to wonderful snorkeling in the Wailea area.

A Word of Warning
As with all snorkeling trips, be sure to monitor the ocean conditions of the beach you are visiting, watching for strong currents and surf. Obey all postings and warnings.
