Hanauma
Bay, a ten minute drive east of
Waikiki Beach, is one of the most
popular scuba and snorkeling
spots in Hawaii.
The centerpiece of the bay
is a long reef that is home to unusually
large parrotfish and a wide variety of
tropical fish. The reef in the bay helps
make the water exceptionally calm,
providing clear views. The fact that
fishing has been prohibited for years
assures an abundance of tame and friendly
marine life. These fish have little fear
of humans and will gladly eat food out of
your hands, although feeding the fish can
be very harmful to them and is STRICTLY
PROHIBITED.
Not to be missed at Hanauma Bay is an
opening in the middle of the reef that
leads to less protected waters. This is a
popular congregating spot for divers
because fish are constantly passing by.
At least half of the people who come to
Hanauma Bay are there for the snorkeling,
so you will see quite a few snorkel tubes
coming out of the water. Nonetheless,
there is plenty of space for everyone,
and the number of divers does not scare
away the fish.
Snorkeling equipment (mask, fins,
snorkel) can be rented for a modest fee.
The water is very calm, so swimmers and
snorkelers of all skill levels can enjoy
Hanauma. Lifeguards are on duty.
