Many of the islands have vacation rentals, but you'll find that the plethora of Maui condo rentals make Maui a good place to stay and save money. The condos themselves aren't necessarily any less expensive on a per night basis than regular hotels, and most have the same amenities you'd expect from a full service hotel (like pools, daily housekeeping service, and the like). But because condos have full kitchens, you can make your own meals and save quite a bit. This is especially useful if you have young children and balk at paying $25 for a full brunch at which your child eats half a muffin. But even if it just adults in your party, it is sometimes nice just to have coffee and fresh fruit on the lanai for pennies instead of a full restaurant breakfast for considerably more.
Condos also often the conveniences of en suite laundry facilities and more room than you'd get for the same price at a hotel.
