Verdmont
Museum
We found it hard to believe
that this house was actually a personal
residence until 1951 (when Verdmont
became a National Trust property), since
there is no plumbing, no electricity and
none of the other conveniences of modern
life. But the fact that the owners made
few modifications to the 1710 structure
makes this a great place to visit, since
it is really like stepping back in time.
Set up on a hill overlooking
the water, this peach-coloured house is
Georgian in style. Both the walls and
much of the finely-crafted furniture is
made of local cedar, and you can still
smell the rich fragrance as you wander
through the rooms, admiring the antiques,
family portraits and collections of
imported porcelain.
Outdoors you can stroll
along the brick path that run through the
rather formal period gardens, and see
panoramic views of the ocean.
Verdmont is located in
Smith's Parish, near the intersection of
Collectors Hill and Sayle Road.
