Civil War and Underground Railroad Museum of Philadelphia
1805 Pine Street
Philadelphia
215-735-8196

The collection, which dates back to 1888, includes paintings and Civil War memorabilia. There is an entire room dedicated to Ulysses S. Grant; items on display include a frock coat made by John Wanamaker (now there is a good old Philadelphia name!), the gold pen used by President Lincoln to sign Grant's commission as Lieutenant General, and a cased presentation sword given to Grant for the Vicksburg victory. But the Grant items are far surpassed by the space devoted to Abraham Lincoln.  In addition to an extensive Lincoln library, the collection includes a lock of Lincoln's hair, a fragment of the flag Lincoln raised at Independence Hall in February 1861, and an original "wanted" poster for the Lincoln assassination conspirators.

The museum's collections (library, archives, photographs) are available for research during normal operating hours; interested researchers should make an appointment in advance.
