2009 Calendar of Annual Events in Philadelphia

January

  • Mummer's Parade (Jan. 1) - an all-day tradition featuring string bands, "fancies," "brigades," and comics who dress in elaborate costumes and march north on Broad Street to City Hall.

February

  • The Philadelphia Boat Show - more than 500 yachts, sailboats and powerboats on display at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

March

  • The Philadelphia Flower Show - the largest indoor horticultural event in the world at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
  • The St. Patrick's Day Parade - an annual event along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway; one of the oldest St. Pat celebrations in the country.

April

  • The Philadelphia Antiques Show - an annual event that benefits the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Penn Relays - one of the world's oldest and largest amateur track meets takes place at Franklin Field (33rd and Spruce Streets).

May

  • The Rittenhouse Square Fine Arts Annual - the country's largest juried art show, featuring paintings and sculpture by area artists. (18th and Walnut Streets).

June

  • Elfreth's Alley Days - many of the homes on America's oldest continually occupied street have open houses. Food, music and Colonial crafts complete the scene.

July

  • The Welcome America Festival (July 4th Weekend) - celebrate the nation's birth with parades, Independence Day ceremonies, and, of course, fireworks.

August

  • Philadelphia Folk Festival - three days of concerts, dancing, food, crafts and fun galore.

September

  • The Philadelphia Distance Run - a half-marathon course that runs through the streets of Center City and along the Schuylkill River.

October

  • Super Sunday - Philadelphia's largest block party takes place on Benjamin Franklin Parkway with food, entertainment, rides, games, and exhibit booths.

November

  • Philadelphia Marathon - thousands of runners compete in the 26.2 mile race along the Schuylkill River.
  • Thanksgiving Day Parade - bands, floats and the annual Santa Claus finale mark Turkey Day in Philadelphia (Benjamin Franklin Parkway).

December

  • Washington Crossing the Delaware (Dec. 25) - more than 200 people participate in this annual re-enactment.
