The Presidio of San
Francisco
Visitor Center (415) 561-4323
Formerly
a military base, now this beautiful
scenic 1,491-acre area is part of the Golden
Gate National Recreation Area and administered
by the National Park Service (NPS). The
Visitor Center, located in what was formerly the Officers' Club on the Main Parade
is a good place to collect
information for your visit.
The Presidio's attractions
include picnic areas, beaches, and a golf
course. The Presidio is also rich in
history -- be sure to learn about it at the Visitor Center and then explore the Presidio by
walking or driving through the miles of
trails and roads that circle around the
former base. These areas are of particular interest:
Main Parade
These 19th century brick buildings surrounding large grassy areas once served as troop quarters. Future plans for this area include museums and a hotel.
Crissy Field
This waterfront park (formerly an airfield and munitions dump)
offers 100 acres of
spectacular open space for recreation,
education, and enjoyment. We find that it's a good spot to watch windsurfers and kite flyers. Crissy Field also has a new overlook that provides spectacular views of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz and Angel Island, and the city skyline.
Foggy Bridge Winery
If you need a break from the outdoors, the winery's Canteen, a tasting room and education center is a good place to sit and admire the view of the famous Golden Gate Bridge.
Presidio Social Club
Billing itself as offering "all the comforts of a club without the dues," the Presidio Social Club, housed in a former barracks, is another good place to relax and unwind.
See What Else is New
The work on renovating the Presdio is
ongoing, so check with the Presidio's web site for the latest before you visit.
