California Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences' three major sections cover the realm of scientific exploration today, with special sections focusing on discoveries on the earth, in the oceans and in space.

California Academy of Sciences

Golden Gate Park
San Francisco
(415) 750-7145

The Steinhart Aquarium focuses on the ocean; the Morrison Planetarium explores the wonders of the universe; and the natural history museum contains exhibits of natural science and phenomena on earth.

In addition, the California Academy of Sciences is home to the Far Side Gallery, which features over 150 of Gary Larson's popular cartoons. Permanent exhibitions include the Biodiversity Center, a section on Wild California, Gem and Mineral Hall, the African Safari, the Human Cultures Gallery, and the SafeQuake earthquake simulator.

Steinhart Aquarium
The Academy's Aquarium showcases over 14,000 species including rare tropical fish, crocodiles and other reptiles, sharks, penguins and seals. Feeding time is always a fun time to visit:

  • The penguins are fed at 11:30 AM and 4 PM
  • Feeding in the Fish Roundabout is at 2 PM

Morrison Planetarium
Shows under the Planetarium's 65-foot dome provide a great opportunity for being entertained as you learn more about the universe.

Tickets are sold at the theater box office in the Earth & Space Hall half an hour before show time. A schedule posted outside the planetarium announces show times and show titles.

Free Highlight Tours
Tours conducted by museum-trained guides are held throughout the day. These tours are free with museum admission and last about an hour. To find out more, stop by the information desk near the front entrance.

Getting There
The Academy of Sciences is located in Golden Gate Park across the music concourse from the Asian Art and de Young museums, separated by the bandshell, fountain and a grove of sycamore trees. You can reach the Academy easily via public transportation by taking the #44 O’Shaughnessy bus which stops right outside the front entrance. The #71 Haight Noriega bus which stops at the corner of Irving Street and Lincoln Avenue and the MUNI-line N-Judah which stops at the corner of Irving Street and Ninth Avenue bring you within a 10-minute walk of the museum.
