The Steinhart Aquarium
focuses on the ocean; the Morrison
Planetarium explores the wonders of the
universe; and the natural history museum
contains exhibits of natural science and
phenomena on earth.
In addition, the California
Academy of Sciences is home to the Far
Side Gallery, which features over 150 of
Gary Larson's popular cartoons. Permanent
exhibitions include the Biodiversity
Center, a section on Wild California, Gem
and Mineral Hall, the African Safari, the
Human Cultures Gallery, and the SafeQuake
earthquake simulator.
Steinhart Aquarium
The Academy's Aquarium
showcases over 14,000 species including
rare tropical fish, crocodiles and other
reptiles, sharks, penguins and seals.
Feeding time is always a fun time to
visit:
- The
penguins are fed at 11:30 AM
and 4 PM
- Feeding
in the Fish Roundabout is at
2 PM
Morrison Planetarium
Shows under the
Planetarium's 65-foot dome provide a
great opportunity for being entertained
as you learn more about the universe.
Tickets are sold at the
theater box office in the Earth &
Space Hall half an hour before show time.
A schedule posted outside the planetarium
announces show times and show titles.
Free Highlight Tours
Tours conducted by
museum-trained guides are held throughout
the day. These tours are free with museum
admission and last about an hour. To find
out more, stop by the information desk
near the front entrance.
Getting There
The Academy of Sciences is
located in Golden Gate Park across the
music concourse from the Asian Art and de
Young museums, separated
by the bandshell, fountain and a grove of
sycamore trees. You can reach the Academy
easily via public transportation by
taking the #44 OShaughnessy bus
which stops right outside the front
entrance. The #71 Haight Noriega bus
which stops at the corner of Irving
Street and Lincoln Avenue and the
MUNI-line N-Judah which stops at the
corner of Irving Street and Ninth Avenue
bring you within a 10-minute walk of the
museum.
