The de Young Museum
features an impressive collection of
American art, with a special emphasis on
American decorative crafts. Items in the
collection are arranged chronologically,
for the most part, and range from 17th century paintings to contemporary art.
The de Young exhibits works
that defined era after era of American
decorative arts. From the parlor of a
Massachusetts Federalist home (reflecting
both the cabinet-making skill of the
period and the emphasis on imports in New
England port cities), to Shaker
furniture, to the Stickley furniture and
Frank Lloyd Wright windows of the Arts
and Craft Movement, the Museum has
excellent examples of American style.
The Museum also displays
paintings by some of the most important
American artists, including works by
Gilbert Stuart, John Vanderlyns
depictions of Niagara
Falls, Childe
Hassams Impressionist scenes of
East Hampton, NY, Winslow Homers
and Thomas Eakins genre paintings,
and early 20th century works
by Georgia OKeeffe.
What Else
Youll See
In addition to the American
art exhibits, the Museum has several
galleries devoted to British silver and
furniture; works from Sub-Saharan Africa;
arts of Melanesia, Micronesia and
Polynesia; and art from Central and South
America.
