The number, quality and
diversity of San Francisco's museums have
contributed to the city's reputation as a
cultural capital. But the cost of soaking
in all that culture can be rather pricey,
since admission prices generally average
$10 per person. If money is short (or
even if it isn't -- who wouldn't mind
saving a few bucks?!) consider scheduling
your museum visits when admission prices
are reduced or waived altogether. The
following is a listing of some of the
museums that offer savings on the
admission fee to those who time their
visits just right. We recommend that you
visit this page often - we update our
list regularly!
Museums with Free
Days
Many museums set aside some
time each week or month when special
admission prices allow more people to
view their treasures.
Museums that are
Always Free
Some museums don't just have
free afternoons or evenings -- they are
free all the time. The following is a
list of great museums that do not charge
an admission fee.
Other
Ways to Save on Museum Admission Fees
A bit of research shows that there are a
few other ways to save on the cost of
visiting many of San Francisco's cultural
treasures. Here are a few ideas to get
you started:
Inquire about
special discounts that may be
available for holders of
Muni-Passes.
Consider purchasing
a Golden Gate Park Explorer Pass,
which provides admission to the Asian Art Museum, the de Young Museum, the Academy of Sciences and the Japanese Tea Garden. The pass costs
only $12.50 (combined admission
would normally run $16.50) and
includes other discounts as well.
The pass is available at the San
Francisco Convention and Visitors
Bureau at Powell and Market
Streets.
Take advantage of
the Senior Citizen and Student
discounts offered at many museums
-- all you need to do is present
an ID proving your eligibility.
