Japan Day 2008 in NYC
On Sunday, June 1st, Central Park's East Meadow will be transformed into a Japanese Summer Festival, featuring the best of traditional and contemporary Japan with a wide range of family-friendly activities and powerful stage performances throughout the day. It is all part of Japan Day 2008, an event designed by the Japanese community of New York City to promote deeper understanding of Japanese culture.
The day kicks off at 8 am with a 4-mile road race, followed by a shorter Kids Run. Then, starting at 10 am and running to 5 pm, there will be live stage shows, free Japanese food and activity tents featuring video games, robots, origami, calligraphy traditional toys and games. Visit JapanDayNYC.org for details.
The first World Science Festival will take place May 28-June 1, 2008 at 15 venues throughout New York City, shining a spotlight on science and exploring the many ways in which scientific discovery and innovation are shaping modern life. For example, on Saturday, May 31, the area in and around Washington Square Park will come alive with the SCIENCE STREET FAIR, a non-stop program of interactive exhibits, experiments, games, and shows that will entertain and inspire, including:
Hands-on horticulture with the New York Botanical Garden.
A demonstration of how to make extraordinary experiments from everyday things by Saul Griffith and the Howtoons guys.
An appearance by Miss Frizzle and the Scholastic Magic School Bus.
A look at the lives of dinosaurs in the American Museum of Natural History’s Paleontology of Dinosaurs Movable Museum.
Fun and bubble-blowing from the New York Hall of Science.
A shocking experience at Liberty Science Center’s electricity exhibit.
If you've got a trip to Philadelphia planned this month, we recommend a stop at the Barnes Foundation. There is great art and sculpture there all the time, but in the warmer weather, you'll also have the bonus of admiring their arboretum.
Spring is also a good time to visit the Franklin Institute's Science Center, especially for kids, who will love the Star Wars exhibit that runs through May 4th. The Philadelphia Museum of Art has a wonderful Frida Kahlo show through May 18th. And while you're there, we also recommend that you check out the authentic Japanese tea house.
Other recommended museums in Philadelphia include the Rodin Museum (featuring the largest collection of the artist's works outside of Paris; the gardens are nice in spring, too) and the Brandywine River Museum for Wyeth art.
