Top Ten Travel Tips for New York City

New York City can be overwhelming - there are seemingly unlimited choices for what to do and what to see. Here are some tips that should help you focus your time and energy:
  1. Visit the Empire State Building at night when lines are at their shortest, and the city really shines.
  2. Spend time in Central Park no matter what the weather - if it is hot, take refuge by one of the lakes; if it is cold, check out the tropical atmosphere of the Central Park Zoo's Rainforest; if it is rainy, hide out in Belvedere Castle.
  3. Times Square really does feel the center of the world - don't miss it!
  4. Take reasonable precautions, of course, but don't worry too much about crime - NYC is one of the safest cities in the U.S.
  5. There is no doubt that New York can be pricey - but you can counteract that by taking advantage of one of the many free events offered around town this summer.
  6. The price of the Staten Island Ferry can't be beat - nor can its views of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan.
  7. Shopping on Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue and 57th Street can't be beat for glitz and glamour (can you say, "Hermes," "Gucci" or "Louis Vuitton?") but in these recessionary times, if you are looking for bargains, check out our tips for discount shopping.
  8. One of our the hidden jewels of Manhattan is the Central Park Conservatory Garden - and while you're in the area, check out one of the museums along Museum Mile.
  9. You owe it to yourself to see a show - our tips on Broadway bargains will help you enjoy NYC nightlife without breaking the bank.
  10. One of our favorite NYC spots is the American Museum of Natural History - and we guarantee that there really is something for everyone in this enormous museum.
