Chrysler
Building

When completed in 1930, this
Art Deco masterpiece was the tallest
building in the world, but within months
that title was passed on to the Empire
State Building. The Chrysler Building
remains a favorite landmark, however,
cherished for the fancy spire reminiscent
of the grillwork on a 20s Chrysler and
for the splendid murals (look for Edward
Trumbull's vast ceiling mural
"Transport and Human Endeavor")
and veneers in the lobby. A 1998
restoration project returned the lobby to
its 1930s splendor.
