Museum of the Moving
Image
36-01 35th Avenue (at 36th
Street)
Astoria, Queens
(718) 784-0077
This
museum is dedicated to educating the
public about the art, history, technique,
and technology of film, television, and
digital media and to examining their
impact on culture and society. It
achieves these goals by maintaining the
nation's largest permanent collection of
moving image artifacts and by offering
exhibitions, film screenings, lectures,
seminars, and other education programs.
Screenings from their huge
collection of movie, TV and advertisement
collections are often shown in
thematically related groups. The 2nd and
3rd floor galleries feature a
"behind the scenes" exhibit
with interactive displays and over 600
artifacts related to making, marketing
and exhibiting moving images. We
especially like the interactive exhibits,
where we can try our hand at everything
from animation to editing sound effects.
Beginning March 23, 2008 the
museum will close for a $65 million
renovation project that will expand
gallery space, and add a 262-seat
theater, a 71-seat screening room, an
education center, and a courtyard. The
museum expects to reopen in late 2009.
