Cooper-Hewitt
National Design Museum
2 East 91st Street (corner
5th Avenue)
Manhattan
(212) 849-8300
Once
Andrew Carnegie's mansion, now part of
the Smithsonian Institution. Outstanding
collection of decorative objects
including architectural drawings, prints,
textiles, ceramics and glass, wallpaper,
jewelry, metalwork and woodwork, often in
creative and witty displays. Or
as they say in their promotional
materials, "The Museum celebrates
the nature of design and explores its
impact on the quality of our lives."
In nice weather, don't miss
the chance to relax in the garden with a
treat or cool drink -- there is
invariably a thought-provoking display to
engage you as you luxuriate in the
wonderful green expanse of the lawn. Even
better, on Friday evenings in July and
August, join them for their "Summer
Sessions" featuring "Design +
DJs + Dancing" in the garden.
For up-to-the-minute
information about exhibitions, hours and
admissions fees, visit the Cooper-Hewitt web
site.
Public transit routes include the Lexington Avenue 4,5 and 6 subways (use either the 86th Street or 96th Street stations) and the Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue buses (the former goes downtown; the latter goes uptown).
