Liberty Science Center

The Liberty Science Center (LSC) is a great place to spend an afternoon exploring a wide range of science topics. The interactive exhibits, all redesigned following a two-year renovation that was completed in July 2007, are engaging, entertaining, and informative. Geared for a mainstream audience, the LSC is not recommended for science experts.

While technically not a New York City attraction, the Liberty Science Center is close enough and interesting enough to warrant a visit. We recommend that you actively explore the museum, not just by looking at the displays, but by participating in the exercises designed to challenge the imagination of visitors of all ages.

Who Should Go
The Liberty Science Center is not recommended for well-read science junkies. People who fit that description may not find the content of the museum to be at a very advanced level. The LSC is recommended for kids and adults who are fascinated by the scientific world and wish to explore it further.

When to Go
Weekends are generally more crowded than weekdays, although you won't be alone on weekdays since this is a popular destination for school groups. You can get a good taste of everything the LSC has to offer in about 3 hours. A major draw-back of the Science Center is the steep admission price. While we generally prefer to steer our readers to lower cost attractions, we are willing to make an exception for the LSC because of its high quality.

How To Get There
Another draw-back is the schlep out to Jersey. If you drive, take the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel to the New Jersey Turnpike. Get out at exit 14B and follow the signs to the LSC, which is a short distance from the Turnpike.

The best way to get there via public transportation is to take the NY Waterway Ferry from the World Financial Center to Jersey City. A free shuttle at the terminal will take you to the LSC entrance. Call 1-800-533-3779 for more information on the ferry.

The Liberty Science Center also provides a free shuttle bus that picks up passengers at the Grove Street PATH station and the Colgate Ferry.

A Special Bonus
Regardless of how you get there, be sure to take a look at the breathtaking views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty once you arrive at the Liberty Science Center.
