National Academy
Museum 1083 Fifth Avenue (between 89th
and 90th Street)
Manhattan
(212) 369-4880
A
beautiful building in its own right (we
love the ornate woodwork and ceilings as
well as the elegant staircase) housing
exhibits that explore the art of design
through architecture, drawings,
engravings, painting and sculpture. The
Academy's collection includes works by
Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, Winslow
Homer, I.M. Pei, Robert Rauschenberg,
John Singer Sargent and Frank Lloyd
Wright. The Annual Exhibition, the oldest
juried show in the country, highlights
new work by contemporary artists. In
addition to hosting exhibits, the academy
runs the oldest art school in New York
and counts among many distinguished
American artists among its members. See
the museum's web site for the latest details about exhibits,
hours and admission fees.
