Summary:
Formerly the private library of J.
Pierpont Morgan (a.k.a. J.P. Morgan),
this marble building now houses a
collection of rare edition and
illuminated manuscripts, objets d'art,
paintings and sculpture. Don't miss the
glass-enclosed garden court.
Serving both as a museum and
a center for scholarly research, the
Morgan Library is home to some of the
worlds greatest treasuries of
artistic, literary, musical, and
historical works. The Librarys
renowned collection of rare books,
manuscripts, and drawings have as their
principal focus the history, art, and
literature of Western civilization from
the Middle Ages to the twentieth century.
Changing exhibitions are drawn from the
permanent collection and from other
museums and libraries in this country and
abroad.
Collection highlights
include a rare vellum copy of the
Gutenberg Bible, drawings from Leonardo
da Vinci, Peter Paul Rubens and
Hilarie-Germain-Edgar Degas, the
autograph manuscript of Mozarts Haffner Symphony, original manuscripts by
Charlotte Brontë and John Steinbeck, and
several hundred letters from George
Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
Logistics
The Morgan Court
Café serves a light luncheon and
afternoon tea. The giftshop offers a
selection of reproductions, cards, and
various gift items.
Note that all groups of ten
or more must book in advance. Walk-in
exhibition and historic tours are offered

Getting There
By subway, take the
#6 to 33rd Street, the #4, #5, #6 or #7
to Grand Central Station, or the B, D, F,
