Summary: Formerly the private library of J. Pierpont Morgan (a.k.a. J.P. Morgan), this marble building now houses a collection of rare edition and illuminated manuscripts, objets d'art, paintings and sculpture. Don't miss the glass-enclosed garden court.

Serving both as a museum and a center for scholarly research, the Morgan Library is home to some of the world’s greatest treasuries of artistic, literary, musical, and historical works. The Library’s renowned collection of rare books, manuscripts, and drawings have as their principal focus the history, art, and literature of Western civilization from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Changing exhibitions are drawn from the permanent collection and from other museums and libraries in this country and abroad.

Collection highlights include a rare vellum copy of the Gutenberg Bible, drawings from Leonardo da Vinci, Peter Paul Rubens and Hilarie-Germain-Edgar Degas, the autograph manuscript of Mozart’s Haffner Symphony, original manuscripts by Charlotte Brontë and John Steinbeck, and several hundred letters from George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
