Smith &
Wollensky (Steakhouse)
797 Third Avenue (49th
Street)

Smith
& Wollensky is the classic NY
steakhouse, with a masculine look (forest
green interior with dark oak flooring and
gleaming brass accents) and a focus on
hearty portions of red meat.
The Food
Start off with a
Ceasar salad or shrimp cocktail but save
plenty of room for your entree, since the
beef comes big here. Whether we order the
Filet Mignon, the Sliced Steak Wollensky
or the Filet au Poivre, we are always
satisfied and invariably leave with a
doggie bag. Sides tend toward the basic,
like creamed spinach and baked potato.
We've never attempted dessert here, but
we hear the cheesecake is a winner.
An Alternative
We actually prefer
Wollensky's Grill, a small but spirited
room on the side of the main restaurant.
The atmosphere is less formal, you can
enjoy lighter supper versions of items
from the main menu (we especially like
their burgers), and the prices aren't so
steep.
