Getting into New York's Top Museums -- For Free

The number, quality and diversity of New York's museums have contributed to the city's stature as one of the world's greatest cultural capitals. But the cost of soaking in all that culture can be rather pricey, since admission prices are now often $20 dollars per person. Fortunately, New York veterans know better than to pay "retail" for a visit to New York's top museums.

Museums With Free Afternoons or Evenings
Many museums set aside a period during the week when the regular admission price is waived. The following is an alphabetical listing of some of the museums that offer free admission to those who time their visits just right. (Click on the name of the museum for more details regarding location and a brief description of what the museum offers.)

Museums That Are Free All the Time
Some museums don't just have free afternoons or evenings -- they are free all the time. The following is a list of great museums that do not charge an admission fee. (Click on the name of each museum for hours and a brief description of the museum's exhibits.)

Suggested Admission: To Pay or Not to Pay?
A number of museums do not have a defined admission price. Instead, they recommend that visitors make a contribution, usually suggesting a specific amount. Do you have to pay the recommended amount to get in? In a word, no, although most people do. While we do not advocate that everyone ignore the suggested admission fee, it is O.K. to pass on paying if your financial circumstances require it. You may get a funny look from the guards if you don't pay (especially if you don't make any contribution at all or if you are wearing a Rolex), but just promise yourself that you will pay double the amount some day when you can afford it.
